The Importance of Being A Nurse Practitioner

Ayasha Thomason

Hi. I’m Ayasha, Thomason.

Heather Stallings

And I’m Heather Stallings.

Ayasha Thomason

And today we’re going to talk about the importance of being a nurse practitioner. It’s no secret that becoming a nurse practitioner is a popular career choice and becoming more and more so every day. In fact, according to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the number of licensed nurse practitioners has set another record grown more than 12% to more than 325,000, compared to just 290,000 in 2019.

Heather Stallings

That’s amazing. I mean, it makes sense, though. A lot of retired MPs and other healthcare professionals stepped up to the role during the pandemic, you remember, because nurse practitioners were granted larger roles by the state government as the need for primary care health professionals went up.

Ayasha Thomason

Some of those waivers are actually still in place, too, allowing full scope of practice for some nurse practitioners. It’s also the young nurses that are starting to realize that they can do more for their patients with their advanced skill set. And generally when you’re a nurse, you care about people, so it makes sense that you’d want to increase that.

Heather Stallings

Yes, absolutely. And of course, we hear it over and over in our featured NP videos. Our MPs always say that they chose this profession because they wanted to do more.

Ayasha Thomason

Well, the increase in pay and the better benefits also helps too, but that’s the role of the nurse practitioner is so vital in all types of healthcare and for lots of different reasons. But, more than that, and you can say this too, Heather. It’s just an extremely rewarding career.

Heather Stallings

Yes, it truly is. I absolutely love what I do, and I wouldn’t change it for anything.
